Does the big name QB on the transfer portal fit Nittany Lions?

The transfer portal has calmed down a bit lately and the numbers are expected to recover after spring training and games, however, a big name from QB, Tyler Shough from Oregon, has entered the portal and could get Penn State’s attention Football

Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough announced on Friday via his twitter that he will enter the transfer portal with the remaining three years of eligibility. Does it fit Penn State Football?

Shough now joins ex-Texas Tech defender Tyler Bowman as the two big names on the defender’s portal, and there will undoubtedly be speculation about whether Penn State Football will want to add one or the other.

Shough will attract a lot of attention, and rightly so, after starting seven games in 2020 for the Ducks and leading them to a Pac 12 title and Fiesta Bowl. In seven games he went through 1,559 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

After former quarterback Will Levis announced that he is moving to Kentucky, the Nittany Lions has only three quarterbacks with scholarships on the list, one of whom is the real freshman Christian Veilleux, who has just arrived on campus.

As it stands now, it looks like Sean Clifford is the favorite to start next fall, however, expect the red-shirted freshman Ta’Quan Roberson to push Clifford this spring and summer and make a save to be the guy.

The two couldn’t be more opposed, as Clifford is an experienced quarterback with 20 games on his resume, but is limited in his skills, while Roberson has only tried one pass in his college career, but is full of raw potential that could be a game changer for the attack and the program next fall.

Let’s take a look at why Shough makes sense or not and a final analysis of whether or not we think Penn State Football will pull the trigger for the old Duck:

Why Shough MAKES sense for Lions in Nittany

Quarterback Tyler Shough did very well in a shortened first season as a starter, playing for 1,559 yards and 13 touchdowns for six interceptions in the offensive attack by former Penn State Football offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead in Oregon.

The former Oregon defender also showed his ability to be a double threat last season, running 271 yards in 66 runs with two touchdowns.

Shough is a highly praised four-star former recruit from Arizona, ranked the 140th best contender in the class of 2018 according to 247sports. When he finished high school, he chose Oregon over North Carolina, Michigan and Alabama among five other high-powered schools.

In just his first season as a center, the second-year defender was efficient in the passing game, completing 63.5% of his passes, with a stellar average of 14.3 yards per completion to go with a quarterback rating of 74, two.

By comparison, Penn State Football quarterback Sean Clifford completed 60.6% of passes, averaging just over 12 yards per completion and a quarterback rating of 69, behind Shough in all categories.

Shough also did a good job avoiding sacks last season, getting fired 11 times for Cliffords 22 in just one game less.
