David Benioff, DB Weiss to develop ‘The Overstory’ as Netflix Series

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss are developing an adaptation of the Richard Powers novel series “The Overstory” on Netflix, Variety Learned.

Richard Robbins, whose previous TV credits include “12 Monkeys” and “Good Girls Revolt”, wrote the pilot’s script and serves as executive producer. Benioff and Weiss will serve as executive producers of their sizable general deal with Netflix. Hugh Jackman will also serve as executive producer along with Benioff’s Bernie Caulfield and Weiss’ Bighead Littlehead production track. Powers is set to serve as an executive co-producer.

The novel was originally published in 2018 and won the Pulitzer Prize. It tells the story of a world next to ours that is vast, interconnected, full of resources, magnificently inventive and almost invisible to us. A handful of disparate people learn how to see this world and are drawn to the catastrophe that unfolds.

“The Overstory” is the last ad in the series for Benioff and Weiss since they signed their contract with Netflix in 2019. They are also writers and executive producers of the Netflix series adaptation of the science fiction book trilogy “The Three- Body Problem ”alongside fellow writer and executive producer Alexander Woo. Rian Johnson also serves as an executive producer along with Brad Pitt and Rosamund Pike, among many others.

Benioff and Weiss are also executive producers of the half-hour dramatic comedy “The Chair,” starring Sandra Oh of showrunner and executive producer Amanda Peet. This program recently announced much of its main cast, which will include Jay Duplass, Bob Balaban, David Morse and Nana Mensah alongside Oh.
