Tyrell Williams’ period with the Raiders appears to be over after just two years.
Las Vegas plans to launch Williams early in the new year of the league in March, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported.
Williams did not play in 2020 due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, and he will pass the Raiders with only one campaign in silver and black. That year of 2019 was good for him, as he took 42 passes for 651 yards and six hits in a Raider attack that desperately needed another receiver to accompany him.
He seemed to have received that help with the 2020 draft and the choice of Henry Ruggs III in the first round of Las Vegas, but the pair never materialized due to Williams’ injury.
With the salary cap expected to be in the range of $ 175- $ 185 million for 2021 – well below the number anticipated before the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Raiders signed with Williams for the first time – teams are expected to release a fair amount of veterans with Williams-like contracts. He currently represents the fifth largest number of captains on the list of Raiders in 2021 with $ 11.6 million, and Las Vegas can save $ 1 million from that number by releasing him.
At just 28 – he will turn 29 on Friday – and after a year of rest, Williams must have something to offer a team looking for the second receiver. With the lower capitalization considered, he is unlikely to come close to what he did with the Raiders, but it is fair to expect Williams to recover elsewhere this season.
