Former South Carolina defender Gamecocks Dylan Thompson has a new job in the NFL.
Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported on Thursday that Thompson was hired by the Houston Texans after spending the past three years as a character trainer in Detroit. Albert Breer of The Monday Morning Quarterback said Thompson would be the team’s development director.
Breer added: “Thompson played briefly in the league and has been highly regarded in the Lions locker room for the past three years. It must be a good resource for new Texas coach David Culley. “
As a South Carolina veteran, Thompson completed 270 of 451 passes for 3,564 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He shot for 5,391 yards with 40 touchdowns and 16 interceptions over his four-year career.
Thompson was the professional quarterback in 64th place in the 2010 class ranking. Among the prospects in the state of South Carolina, he was 41st.
San Francisco hired Thompson as a free agent not hired in 2015. He spent that season on the training team before the 49ers released him the following spring. His professional career ended after a few spells with the Los Angels Rams in 2016 and 2017.
Charleston Southern appointed Thompson director of player development for his men’s basketball team in the fall of 2017. Detroit brought him on board in 2018.
