Hyliion presents next generation battery module to improve performance and efficiency

Austin, Texas – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Hyliion Holdings Corp. (NYSE: HYLN) (“Hyliion”), a leader in electrified powertrain solutions for Class 8 commercial vehicles, today announced the introduction of its next generation battery module that integrates Toshiba’s LTO cells with Hyliion’s technology advances to achieve longer battery life, higher charge rates and greater safety. Based on Hyliion’s proprietary battery system, the battery module will be incorporated into the next evolution of the Hyliion Hybrid system.

Whether it’s our hybrid system or our all-electric powertrain, Hyliion solutions are designed to give customers the most flexibility during the transition to electrified transport, ”said Thomas Healy, founder and CEO of Hyliion. “The development of this next generation battery module represents an important milestone in the hybrid commercialization process, further strengthening our general technology platform as we innovate in future solutions ”.

Building on previous battery experience and incorporating improvements for improved battery cooling, the new module offers several performance-related benefits and allows for a 40% improvement in cooling compared to the previous system. The main benefits include:

  • Long life – The improved Hyliion battery module is capable of up to 5 times more life cycle than a conventional EV battery.
  • Higher loading rates – Enhanced heat dissipation allows for higher battery charge and discharge rates and greater sustained energy output.
  • Speed – The battery can be recharged in less than 8 minutes, an unprecedented charging time compared to other EV battery solutions.
  • Safety –The new module design reduces the operating temperature of the cells, allowing for a safer operating environment.

The project has already passed UN 38.3 battery test procedures and offers improvements to withstand the stresses and rigors incurred on the road.

The Hyliion hybrid system can be installed on most major Class 8 commercial vehicles to help reduce fuel use, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, improve performance and reduce operating costs. The hybrid system is already in service in North America, including implementations in industry-leading transportation and logistics fleets.

The Hybrid solution is one of Hyliion’s two electrified powertrain systems for long-distance Class 8 commercial vehicles that also includes the Hypertruck ERX. Hyliion’s electrified power train solutions use battery and proprietary software systems, combined with electric and electronic power motors, to produce an electrified power train platform that can be used to augment, in the case of the Hybrid system, or replace fully, in the case of Hypertruck ERX, traditional diesel engines or compressed natural gas (CNG) and improve their performance. Hyliion’s solutions are designed to be fuel agnostic, giving customers the most flexibility to choose the vehicles that best fit their overall strategy in their transition to electrified transport.
