Google is testing dark mode for desktop search again

Google is testing a dark mode for its desktop search site that responds to the user’s system display configuration, a measure that may have gained strength to alleviate eye fatigue problems for people who work longer hours at home.

The test appears to have limited implementation at the moment, but as the images show, the very dark gray theme extends not only to the Google homepage, but to search results as well.

It is not known when the dark mode for desktop search can be officially launched worldwide. “We’re always testing new ways to improve our experience for our users, but we don’t have anything specific to advertise right now,” said Google The Verge.

It is not the first time that we have seen dark mode appear in Google search on the desktop. The feature appeared to some users in December, but then quietly disappeared into the ether of the Internet.

Apple launched Dark Mode in 2018 with macOS Mojave and iOS 13, and support for the system-wide option is now a basic feature of most native and third-party applications on mobile and desktop devices.

But, as we’ve learned from Google’s longstanding efforts to stop and start to bring dark mode to Gmail, there’s no telling when or even if this change will end see the daylight.

However, there are alternative methods available to get rid of the plain white background in your Google searches. One that we like is the Dark Reader browser extension, which is available for Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge.
