Public Prosecutor (DPP) Director Roger Gaspard instructed the police to accuse a man for the murder of registrar Andrea Bharatt.
Investigators told Express that they plan to file the charge overnight, with the intention of bringing the 24-year-old Malabar man to court today.
The man was reportedly in the vehicle when Joel Balcon kidnapped Bharatt in Arima on January 29.
The instructions were given yesterday afternoon by the DPP.
Investigators said Gaspard also instructed the man’s wife – a 37-year-old woman – to be accused of receiving stolen items.
Balcon died of blunt trauma
Balcon died Monday afternoon at the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex on Mt Hope.
His autopsy performed yesterday at the Forensic Science Center in Federation Park found that he had died as a result of blunt trauma.
His injuries included brain fractures, several broken ribs, bleeding from his internal organs, burn marks on his back (possibly from a Taser), contusion in his right eye, bleeding in the brain and damage to his legs and shoulders.
The autopsy was performed by pathologist Dr. Eastlyn McDonald Burris.
Balcon, also known as Devon Charles, was the second person to die in police custody.
Andrew Morris, 35, of Tumpuna Road, Arima, died at Arima Hospital on February 1, but his death was reported by police on February 3.
Police said he was taken to hospital after suffering injuries while trying to escape.
An autopsy performed on Monday at the Forensic Science Center was inconclusive.
Relatives requested a second private autopsy, performed on Tuesday by pathologist Prof Hubert Daisley at Simpsons Shalom Chapel in Couva.
This autopsy said Morris died of blunt trauma, which caused his lungs to collapse.
Andrea’s funeral tomorrow
Bharatt’s funeral is scheduled for tomorrow.
Relatives told Express that his body will be taken to the family home, where a small ceremony with close relatives will be held at 9 am.
From there, his body will be transported as part of a procession by the Arima Magistrates’ Court before being taken to the Igreja da Assembly da Fé in Arouca, where his funeral will take place from 11 am.
This service is expected to be broadcast live.
Bharatt will be cremated at the Belgroves Funeral Home in Tacarigua.
The results of an autopsy performed on Monday on Bharatt’s body were inconclusive.
However, a second private autopsy performed at the Boodoo Funeral Home in Cunupia the following day determined that she died of head trauma and hemorrhage.
National Security Minister Stuart Young told Express on Tuesday that he asked for a report from the Forensic Science Center.
“I have confidence in the forensic pathologists at the Forensic Science Center. I look forward to the outcome of this report, ”said Young.
Bharatt, a graduate of the University of the West Indies, was a clerk at the Arima Magistrates’ Court.
On the afternoon of January 29, she and a co-worker got into what she believed to be a taxi on King Street, Arima. |
