Kevin Jiang, 26, was found dead on Saturday with several gunshot wounds.
The police are looking for a Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate in connection with the fatal shooting of a Yale University student.
Investigators are trying to question Qinxuan Pan, 29, who was named a person of interest in the murder of Kevin Jiang, 26, New Haven Police Chief Otoniel Reyes announced at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon. Police say he is not a suspect in the case at this time. “I’m not saying he’s the sniper right now,” said Reyes.
Pan was last seen at a Best Western hotel in North Haven, Connecticut, and is considered to be armed and dangerous, said Reyes.
Jiang, a former member of the Army National Guard and a graduate student at Yale, was found dead from several gunshot wounds on Saturday night near the university campus in New Haven, police said.
He was studying at the Ivy League University School of Environment and wanted to use his education to “make the world better,” said Yale President Peter Salovey during a news conference on Monday.
Police are investigating whether he was the target and whether the shooting followed an incident of roadside violence, as Jiang was operating a vehicle at the time, Reyes said on Monday.
Pan currently has an arrest warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle in Massachusetts, said Reyes. Another arrest warrant is in New Haven for extradition related to this charge.
He is a graduate of MIT and has affiliations with the university, said Reyes.
Authorities have not detailed how Pan is linked to the case.
