CBS All Access will stop working on older Apple TVs when Paramount Plus is released

CBS All Access is scheduled to become Paramount Plus on March 4, but you will not be able to watch it if you have a second or third generation Apple TV. The company announced that it will not update its application for these devices when the streaming service is restarted next month, as noted by MacRumors.

The announcement makes CBS All Access / Paramount Plus the latest service to end support for decoders. YouTube has announced that it will abandon support starting next month, while HBO abandoned aging streaming boxes last year. The second generation of Apple TV is over a decade old (it was launched in 2010), while the third generation version was launched in 2012, so it is understandable that we are starting to see a wave of obsolete applications.

Users will still be able to cast Paramount Plus to older Apple TVs using an iPad or iPhone, so their content will not be completely blocked.

Unlike the latest Apple TV models (from 2015 onwards), which feature modern software and an App Store that makes it simple for developers to continue to update their apps, older Apple TV models generally only see updates for individual streaming applications when Apple updated the entire operating system – an increasingly rare occurrence today.

Closing the CBS app on older TVs is not the only change that the Paramount Plus transition is causing: 9to5Mac also notes that the company no longer offers the CBS All Access and Showtime package to Apple TV Plus subscribers.
