Breakfast brand Aunt Jemima renamed Pearl Milling Company

The breakfast brand Tia Jemima will be renamed the Pearl Milling Company, it was announced on Tuesday after the 130-year-old maple syrup mascot was examined last year for its links to slavery.

Quaker Oats, a division of PepsiCo that owns the brand, revealed the new name and logo, which she said will hit stores in June.

“Although the name on the box has changed, the excellent-tasting products – the” pearl “inside the familiar red box – remain the same, with the mission of creating happy breakfast moments for everyone,” said the company on its website .

Last June, Quaker Oats announced Aunt Jemima’s future retirement, saying the character’s origins are “based on a racial stereotype”.

The logo was originally inspired by the 19th century minstrel character “mama”, a black woman who was content to serve her white masters.

A former slave, Nancy Green, became the first face of pancake products in 1890.

The move to retire the brand came after the company faced a strong reaction following national protests by the Black Lives Matter over the deaths of George Floyd and several other black Americans by the police.
