A new report from Reuters today, citing data from Counterpoint Research, says the iPhone 12 mini accounted for only 5% of total iPhone 12 sales during the first half of January in the United States. This is just the latest report in a growing catalog of data that suggests weaker than expected demand for the iPhone 12 mini.
Reuters says:
Sales of the iPhone 12 mini in the United States from Apple Inc accounted for only 5% of the total sales of its new phones during the first half of January, industry data provider Counterpoint said on Tuesday, adding signs of quiet demand for the new smaller version of your main device.
The report also includes comments from JP Morgan analyst William Yang, who speculated that Apple could halt production of the iPhone 12 mini during the second quarter. That would not mean that Apple would stop selling it, but that the company would sell units that it had already produced.
Yang explains that what we are seeing with the iPhone 12 mini is also indicative of the smartphone market as a whole:
“The adjustment of the product mix is well expected by investors and should not be a negative surprise,” added Yang. “This is in line with what we are seeing in the broader global market, where screens below 6.0” now account for about 10% of all smartphones sold, “added Kang.
Although sales of the iPhone 12 mini are potentially weaker than expected, analysts said sales of the iPhone 12 line as a whole are higher than expected, driven mainly by increased demand for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max .
Of course, Apple no longer reports unit sales for any of its products, much less specific analyzes of different variants in the general product categories. As such, we will probably never know how many iPhone 12 mini units Apple sold compared to the rest of the iPhone 12 line.
Take from 9to5Mac
As I already wrote, just because the iPhone 12 mini is not selling as well as the rest of the iPhone 12 line does not mean that Apple will necessarily discontinue it. People using the 5.4 inch device are big fans of it; it is proven for more niches than Apple initially expected.
The iPhone 12 mini is also important to Apple from a business perspective, as it offers a way to keep the starting price of the iPhone 12 line at $ 699. 9to5Mac Readers last month, more than 66% said they also anticipate that the iPhone 12 mini format will live to see another year.
