TSU is partnering with Baylor St. Luke’s to supply vaccines to communities surrounding the university. The effort specifically targets the elderly in vulnerable populations.
The vaccination clinic is not open to the public. But we were told about the vaccines available and people started to show up.
“I’m glad that they put it in the neighborhood. When I received the message that said it was here, that’s when I got up and came, ”said Bárbara Daniels, who arrived at 8 am to get the vaccine.
Daniels said that although she is not yet 65, she has an underlying disease that meets the vaccine’s eligibility requirements.
According to state guidelines, people in the following groups are eligible to be vaccinated now.
Phase 1A: Frontline health professionals and residents of long-term care facilities
Phase 1B: People over 65 or over 16 with a health condition that increases the risk of serious COVID19 disease, including, but not limited to:
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Heart problems, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies
“It’s protection, you know. It’s a 50/50 chance. If you can’t, it’s something to help you feel more secure, ”said Terry Verrett of receiving the vaccine.
Another man, Emiel Owens, said he brought his wife to get the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday and there were no lines.
But on Tuesday, when he returned to take a relative, he described the line as “gigantic”.
“But it’s good. We are serving the community and that is part of the institution’s mission, ”said Owens.
He talked to ABC13 about his wife’s vaccination process, explaining that when she came in, she had to take the temperature and fill out papers.
“I’m sure it is to track information about who is getting the vaccine and so it was just a quick process. She took the injection and left,” he said.
“Not only do we serve students, but we are also part of the Third Ward community and, in fact, the Houston community, we are just preparing for what we need to do to solve this specific problem that the world is having with this COVID-19 “continued Owens.
Baylor St. Luke’s has a link to sign up for information on how to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at TSU.
ABC13 is also working to get more details on how long the clinic will last and whether they have plans to expand it.
