Microsoft Word’s dark mode is getting even darker

Microsoft is improving Word’s dark mode to make it even darker. The software manufacturer has started testing a Word update that will color entire documents on a dark screen. Currently, Word has a dark mode that modifies the ribbon and toolbars, but the screen remains white. A future update of Word will include the ability to switch the screen to dark mode as well.

“This is a feature that has long been requested by many Office Insiders and we are excited to see it happen,” explains Ali Forelli, program manager for the Word team at Microsoft. “With Dark mode, you will notice that the color of the previously white page is now dark gray / black.” Although the screen changes, the colors in a document will also be adjusted. Reds, blues, yellows and other bright colors will be “slightly shifted to silence the overall color palette effect” and match the dark background.

Word will have a new mode switch button for your darkest screen.

There will be a Switch modes button on the Word ribbon to switch between a dark and light screen, and options in Word to permanently disable the dark screen as well. This new update of Word’s dark mode is similar to what currently exists in OneNote, which has options to switch between a dark and light screen.

This darker mode is currently available for Office 365 beta testers, so it should be implemented for all Word users in the coming months.
