Prof Alexander Dodoo, head of the GSA
Professor Alex Dodoo, head of the Ghana Standards Authority, GSA, asked scientists to scientifically test the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide for the treatment and / or cure of Coronavirus.
GhanaWeb monitored his comments on Joy FM’s news program, Newsfile; in which panelists discussed the overall fight against coronavirus in Ghana.
“… Let’s do a detailed blind study, using what we all know about how to test things and then have a vision, which is based on facts. Without that, we will harm our society, even if the intention of all parties is to save ”, he said.
He reinforced the general consensus of the panelists that the current use of the product needed to be regulated, since it could easily and inadvertently be abused. “Currently, as we have it, hydrogen peroxide has not been evaluated. It has potential, but it must be tested ”, he added.
He stressed the role that the FDA should play in the process of scientifically testing the product. “… We are charging Ghanaian scientists to carry out properly evaluated studies under the supervision of the Food and Drugs Authority because they will give the license to determine whether it is good or bad,” he concluded.
A recent joint monitoring exercise by officials from the Pharmacy Council (PC) and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) revealed the shortage of hydrogen peroxide in pharmaceutical facilities due to the purchase of panic.
A statement by the two agencies added that the development led to the sale of counterfeit and substandard hydrogen peroxide on the market.
Pharmacies and over-the-counter drug stores have therefore been warned to always buy their stocks from licensed wholesalers and manufacturers.
“The general public is also being reminded to buy only hydrogen peroxide and other drugs approved by the Food and Drugs Authority and to pay attention to the mandatory FDA registration numbers for such products, if they are manufactured in Ghana,” says a statement.
