Legendary NFL running back Emmitt Smith believes the Dallas Cowboys are “uncertain” about whether Dak Prescott is the team’s “future” or not.
Smith, who has won three Super Bowls in 13 seasons with the Cowboys, told the SB Nation NFL Show this week that there would be no going back and forth about Prescott’s contract if Dallas bet on him as a defender.

“The only answer I can give is that the Cowboys are uncertain whether or not it is the Cowboys’ future,” said Smith, via KRLD radio. “Other than that, if he were the complete future of the Dallas Cowboys, they wouldn’t have made a point of giving him a contract.”
Prescott previously signed a $ 31.4 million franchise tag during the off-season, after failing to negotiate a long-term contract with the team. He suffered an ankle injury at the end of the season on October 11 against the New York Giants, but owner Jerry Jones made it clear that Dallas was still invested in Prescott.

“You would not offer Dak what we have offered in the past if you did not find it very special,” said Jones in January. “The question is how do you guys get together? And that’s not strange to me. I’ve been doing this my whole life, putting things together. We have to get together.”
But Smith is reading between the lines and says there is no “compromise” with Prescott.
“I mean, at the end of the day, Tony Romo, they were committed to Romo right away,” explained Smith. “Right away. And he came in and replaced Drew Bledsoe. I mean, he’s not the oldest guy. He’s not the most flashy guy and he’s not the fastest guy either. And he had his challenges. But there was a compromise for Tony Romo. There is no compromise with Dak Prescott. “
