The Detroit Pistons are expected to switch from veteran point guard Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks in exchange for point guard Dennis Smith Jr. and compensation for the draft, according to Shams Charania and James Edwards III Atlético.
The change occurs when the Pistons are in the early stages of what appears to be a painful reconstruction.
Detroit spent a lot in the off-season and Jeremi Grant is enjoying a year of great expansion. However, there is no avoiding the fact that the team will be the last in the Eastern Conference between 5 and 18 years old.
Charania and Edwards previously reported that Rose and the Pistons “mutually agreed that an exchange would be better for both sides”. Rose would play on a team closer to the playoffs, and Detroit could focus on younger players on the backcourt.
The situation is not very surprising, considering how the last few years have played out in Motor City.
Blake Griffin underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last January. Reggie Jackson also missed a large part of 2019-20 because of a stress reaction on his back before being bought of your contract.
The Pistons obviously had high hopes when they acquired Griffin in January 2018, but that optimism is gone. Negotiating with Andre Drummond on what amounted to a wage cut before the 2020 deadline showed how the organization was willing to start taking a long-term view of the list.
Detroit kept Rose, probably in part because he only has $ 7.7 million against the salary cap. The front line knew that it could easily review trade negotiations at a later date.
Rose continued to be a productive presence on the court after her recovery from the 2018-19 Minnesota Timberwolves season. He averaged 18.1 points and 5.6 assists in 50 games. He reached his career record at 49% of his field goals, although his 30.6% clip beyond the hoop showed that his reach remains somewhat limited.

In 15 games in 2020-21, he has an average of 14.2 points and 4.2 assists in 22.8 minutes on the ground.
Rose’s knee injuries hindered his NBA career, and it looked like he was approaching an unceremonious ending in the league after a brutal start to the 2017-18 campaign with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
While his days as an MVP candidate were over, his time at the Timberwolves showed that he was back as a dynamic scoring guard. He was unable to hide his emotion after a 50-point performance in the win over Utah Jazz on October 31, 2018.
The Knicks basically know what they’re getting at Rose, given her previous stint in the 2016-17 franchise.
He never hit more than 37 percent of his three points in an entire season, and he didn’t adapt his game much to compensate for his injuries. According to NBA.com, 42.4 percent of his attempted kicks came within 3 meters of the basket.
Rose’s contributions to the defense are also minimal. He ranked 89th among shipowners in ESPN’s real plus-minus (-2.50) defensive in 2019-20.
And its durability will always be a question mark. He was limited to 51 games in 2018-19 and was out of 16 games a year ago.
Having said all that, Rose’s scoring and play make him a solid addition to the New York defense court.
The situation of the owner of the Knicks has been terrible for some seasons. The Smith experiment did not work, and Elfrid Payton’s inability to stretch the floor makes it unsuitable as an initial option.
Immanuel Quickley is showing promise as a newbie and could be a long-term solution. The franchise doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the 21-year-old immediately.
With the addition of Rose, the Knicks found a short-term plug-hole, and there should be no doubt about their fit with coach Tom Thibodeau, as they have spent nearly six seasons with the Chicago Bulls and Timberwolves.
