San Diego County Confirms First Pediatric Death from COVID-19 – NBC 7 San Diego

San Diego County’s first pediatric death from COVID-19 was confirmed on Friday by the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). The patient was a 10-year-old boy with underlying health problems.

His death was characterized as “another sad milestone” amid the coronavirus pandemic, which claimed the lives of more than 450,000 people in the United States, 43,000 in California and 2,700 in San Diego County.

“Our deepest condolences go out to this child’s family and friends,” said county public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten. “The death of this boy is a bleak reminder that this pandemic affects everyone in our community, regardless of age, and we must do everything we can to protect each other and slow the spread of the virus.

The county reported only two COVID-19-related deaths involving patients aged 10 to 19 years, and none between 0 and 9. These two deaths represent about 0.1% of the county’s total of 2,777 deaths.
