Tom Thibodeau’s favorite, Derrick Rose, is now available.
According to The Athletic, the reconstructors Pistons and Rose have agreed to look for a new vacancy and are in negotiations with the Knicks for the guard, who was left out of the last three games for personal reasons.
The Post reported on January 26 that the Knicks are monitoring Rose’s situation with Thibodeau lobbying for management. Thibodeau trained Rose in Chicago and Minnesota. According to a source, the Knicks would be Rose’s favorite destination because of Thibodeau and her first visit to the Garden in 2016-17.
Atlético’s new report stated that the Knicks talked to the Pistons about a possible exchange and that several teams are interested.
The Knicks had a good game of play by Elfrid Payton as a starter, supported by rookie Immanuel Quickley, who became a fan favorite.
Knicks fans have seen Rose in New York and probably wouldn’t mind a move that could hurt Quickley’s minutes.
A deal for Rose would probably not cost much on assets. The Knicks have three lottery options available – Kevin Knox, Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr. – according to sources. Knox, however, would probably not be traded for Rose.
The Knicks also have the first round choice of 2021 that they obtained from the Mavericks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade, but would probably hesitate to negotiate that choice because it could turn into a lottery choice.
The Knicks can inherit Rose’s $ 7.2 million salary without giving up a player, because they are $ 18 million below the salary cap.
In July, it was reported that the Knicks could be interested in Rose if the Pistons made it available.
“Every now and then, you meet someone who matches your personality,” Rose’s agent, BJ Armstrong, told The Post in July. “Tom and Derrick got along well. They are peas in a pod. They are addicted to basketball. They love the game. They both love to compete. They had a unique understanding between them. ”
The Pistons are making their choice of newbie lottery, Killian Hayes, a priority. Thibodeau wants to stay in the playoff contest. The Knicks are sixth in the Eastern Conference after 24 games, the mark of a third of the 72-game season.
Saturday has become the day that free agents signed in November can be traded. The Knicks signed Austin Rivers, Nerlens Noel and Alec Burks in the off-season.
