Massachusetts climate: expected snowfall increases to up to 12 inches due to Sunday’s Super Bowl storm

In the hours leading up to the last winter storm in Massachusetts, updated forecasts suggest a greater-than-expected snowfall, with the storm expected to head further north.

How much will we receive?

On an expected snowfall map issued by the National Meteorological Service late Saturday afternoon, most of the state is expected to see 10 to 20 centimeters, with pockets of communities seeing higher and lower totals.

In Boston and the Boston metropolitan area, the forecast is 15 to 20 centimeters. To the south of the city and down to Foxborough, 20 centimeters of snow of up to 30 centimeters are expected.

In central Massachusetts, the storm is expected to have a more significant impact further north. While earlier storm models suggested that Worcester would see more snow than Fitchburg, both communities are now expected to see 15 to 20 centimeters of snow. Western Worcester County must wait 10 to 15 centimeters.

More snow is also expected further north, in Pioneer Valley. From Springfield to Greenfield, ten to fifteen centimeters are in the most recent forecast, with a handful of communities west of Springfield with a probability of eighteen to twenty centimeters.

Berkshire County can expect ten to six inches in Great Barrington and three to four further north in Pittsfield and North Adams.

When will the snow start to fall and stop?

Snow is expected on Sunday morning in much of Massachusetts, first reaching western Massachusetts, then reaching Worcester, followed by Boston.

The National Weather Service warns that snowfall can be heavy at times, with snowfall rates of 2.5 to 5 centimeters an hour on Sunday afternoons. The trip can be dangerous due to heavy snow and gusts of up to 50 miles per hour.

The snow is expected to end in Massachusetts on Sunday night.
