Four indoor athletics records are broken at the South Carolina Invitational

COLUMBIA, SC – A quartet of student-athletes from Alabama athletics made history at the Crimson Tide with record performances on the South Carolina Invitational Saturday.

The AU indoor track record book has been rewritten in the men’s heptathlon and mile and also in the women’s 3000m within the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex.

School records

  • Jake Spotswood opened the day finishing the male heptathlon in third place with 5,447 points
  • The 5,447 points put him 108 overtaking former Michael Hughes program record holder (5,339) from February 25 to 26, 2011
  • In the women’s 3000m, Mercy Chelangat broke a 34-year UA record with an NCAA No. 2 lead time of 9:02:54
  • The 3000m indoor program record was previously held by Liz Lynch (9: 05.94) of February 12, 1986
  • Just a second after Chelangat, Amaris Tyynismaa crossed the finish line to post a time in the NCAA’s top five of 9:03:46
  • With a time of 3:57:83, Eliud Kipsang broke a 21-year program record on the male covered mile, which was previously held by Tim Broe (3: 59.38) on February 12, 1999
  • The rookie captured his first sub-four mile with a final 28.9 200m and broke the installation record

Field Events

  • In his season debut, Bobby Colantonio Jr. secured a second place in the men’s shot put with a shot of 22.07 m, while Kieran McKeag (19.85m) placed in fifth place
  • With a 15.96m launch, Cherisse Murray placed fourth and Nickolette Dunbar (15.94m) finished sixth in the women’s shot put
  • Isaac Odugbesan conquered his second victory of the season with a 19.33m shot in the men’s shot put, while other teammates Chago Basso (6º, 16.44m) and Nathan Cooper (7º, 15.62m) completed the group
  • In the women’s weight throw, Taylor Gorum (19.67m) set up a sixth place showing
  • Taylor Pickett ended the day in the female pole vault with a 3.78m jump to the eighth place

Track evidence

  • In their first indoor encounter of the season, Jami Reed was second in the female mile, running the track with a time of 4: 43.36
  • Lauren Turner (2: 08.74) followed AU women in the 800m with a fourth place
  • Alabama went 9-10-11 in the men’s 3,000m with Noel Rotich (9º, 8: 27,44), Mateo Barreto (10º, 8: 28,71) and Paul Selden (11º, 8: 30,31)
  • Haley Wright 18h.47 led the Crimson Tide women in the 5000m with a third place, while Jack Hawes (14: 53.12) followed the men’s team finishing fifth
  • The last track event of the day was the men’s DMR, which reduced his time with a 10: 03.87

Crimson Tide will head to the Tyson Invitational (12-13 February) next weekend for their first of three meetings in Fayetteville, Ark.
