Santos renegotiate QB contract Drew Brees, free up space in 2021

While the world continues to wait for an update on Drew Brees, the Saints have taken an important step towards the veteran’s contract.

New Orleans renegotiated Brees’s contract to reduce its base salary in 2021 to a minimum, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported on Friday, according to a well-informed source. The club can now keep it on the list after June 1, while dramatically reducing its maximum number from 2021.

Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap was the first to report the news.

Pelissero noted that the Saints will now carry a $ 12 million limit for Brees, instead of the $ 36 million they would have initially cost the team. Another $ 11.5 million would hit the limit in 2022, he added.

The move frees Santos about $ 24 million, which will be crucial in an off-season in which many teams will be homeless.

The 41-year-old has been expected to announce his retirement for months. In the meantime, Brees, who knows the restructuring of his contract well for the benefit of his team, made a point of making Saints more solid, spreading the impact of the ceiling if he decided to give up.
