Warning: this post contains spoilers for the fifth episode of WandaVision.

You visited the spider verse: Welcome to the Multiverse! The fifth episode of 1980 set WandaVision – boldly titled “In a very special episode” – officially crossed the chains between two Marvel worlds that have so far remained separate. In the closing moments, Westview’s most-assisted citizen, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), is visited by her long-dead brother Pietro, last seen fighting and dying, alongside the Avengers in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Only that it is not the Pietro Aaron Taylor-Johnson played in Joss Whedon’s 2015 blockbuster. Instead, this Pietro is Peter Maximoff, also known as Quicksilver: the version of the ultra-fast hero that Evan Peters played X-men: Days of a forgotten future and X-Men: Apocalypse, two entries in the now defunct 20th Century Fox X-verse. With Walt Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019, fans have long believed that it is only a matter of time before these mutants begin to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. .. and that time seems to be now.

“The long-lost brother manages to hold his smelly sister to death or what?” are the first words that come out of Peter’s mouth, while Wanda tries to process his brother’s return – not to mention his new appearance – and frame him with his current sitcom reality. Meanwhile, on the other side of the screen, Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) is also trying to find out where this “new” brother came from. “Did they reformulate Pietro?” she asks, perplexed. But the seasoned Marvel audience at home knew exactly what was going on.

It is important to note that Wanda herself does not have a counterpart in verse X. Because Pietro and Wanda – who are descendants of the mutant master of metal, Magneto in the continuity of Marvel comics – are key players in the X-Men and Avengers comics , Fox and Disney briefly discussed which universe had the rights to use them. Eventually, the two sides reached an distension where the brothers can appear as mutants in verse X and as augmented beings with Infinity Stone in the MCU. But the X-Men the franchise chose to present only Quicksilver, cutting a scene from Days of past past that would have made reference to his telekinetic sister.

The barriers between previously separated Marvel universes will continue to collapse as Phase 4 of the MCU continues. There are rumors, for example, that the third Sony and Marvel Spider man The film will feature the current web launcher, Tom Holland, meeting with his predecessors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The actor dodged these reports in a new interview with Variety, claiming that: “If they are, they haven’t told me yet!”

But in the same conversation, he clearly described the still untitled sequence, which is currently in production, as “the most ambitious stand-alone superhero film ever made”, giving credit to the idea that Marvel has something big up its sleeve. Speaking recently to Yahoo Entertainment, Netherlands co-star Zendaya seemed equally impressed with the film’s reach. “There’s a lot going on – much happening, ”she joked.

It has also been known for a long time that WandaVision will connect directly to the next Doctor Strange sequence, with a revealing title: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Directed by Sam Raimi – who assumed the director’s seat vacated by the director of the original film, Scott Derrickson – the film will pair Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme with Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. The two appeared side by side on the star-studded panel at Marvel Comic-Con 2019 to trigger the crossover. “I’m really excited to be able to connect a story to a media and bring it to the movies,” said Olsen at the time.

More recently, Olsen caused a surprise WandaVision cameo that can rival Luke Skywalker’s mind-boggling appearance at the end of season 2 The Mandalorian. Although she might be referring to Peters, Twitter has a few other multiverse suspects that they hope to see before the Westview curtain falls.

WandaVision is currently broadcasting on Disney +.
