The exchange of Carson Wentz could happen with one of these 11 teams

With Les Bowen hearing that a Carson Wentz deal is “close” to happening, let’s take a look at where the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback could end up.

On the surface, this is the most logical landing site for Wentz.

With Philip Rivers retiring and Jacoby Brissett set to be a free agent, the only Colts defenders under contract for 2021 are … Jacob Eason (fourth round pick in 2020) and Jalen Morton (UDFA signing in 2020). In other words, the Colts are in dire need of a new QB.

Wentz’s connection to the Colts is obvious. Former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich and former Eagles quarterback coach Press Taylor are now in Indy. Wentz reportedly has an interest in meeting with Reich.

But is this interest mutual? Jeff McLane has already raised this question:

“I’m not sure if Frank would accept it,” said a source familiar with Reich’s thinking.

Based on what I heard, regardless of that, I’m also not sure that Reich is dying to catch Wentz.

Mike Garafolo did recently said the Eagles “had conversations” with the Colts, but he also talked about how they might be reluctant to give up recruiting capital.

Based on that, I am reluctant to assume that the Colts are willing to give up their choice in the first round as No. 21 overall to get Wentz. Maybe a choice of Day 2 and something else, if anything

Probability: 4/10

Jon Gruden seemed very in love with Wentz when the quarterback came to Gruden’s QB Camp segment, which used to be on ESPN. In 2017, Gruden told high school football players that Wentz is the defender they should emulate.

Former Eagles preseason color analyst and Philly native Mike Mayock, now the Raiders’ general manager, also spoke highly of Wentz. Mayock ranked Wentz as the # 1 overall perspective – not just the quarterback – in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Raiders have Derek Carr under contract until 2022, but they can switch him this offseason to free up more than $ 19.6 million in cap space. Carr had the ninth highest passer rank in the NFL last year, but the Raiders only went 19-29 with him as a starter under Gruden. Wentz (29 years old in December) is slightly younger than Carr (30 years old in March) and the Raiders may think he has a higher roof.

The Eagles will probably prefer to trade Wentz for AFC if they can.

Probability: 8/10

Mitchell Trubisky is going to be a free agent. He had a good stretch at the end of the regular season, but Chicago will (or at least WE MUST) be careful not to buy gold from the fool. Nick Foles is still under contract, but struggled (80.8) after taking over.

And maybe the Bears, who supposedly called to talk about Stafford, are after Wentz. John Kincade said on Wednesday that he heard that the Bears are a team to watch.

John DeFilippo, who played a role in the success of Wentz’s almost MVP in 2017, is the coach of defenders in Chicago. The Bears may think they have an internal way to fix this broken quarterback.

That said, I can’t imagine Wentz wanting to enter a dynamic where he could be choked by Foles again. So … maybe the Bears will exchange Bellows back to Philadelphia in a package for Wentz? I am sure that some would not mind watching this happen.

Probability: 6/10

The Panthers were supposed to be at Stafford and it is not difficult to understand why. Teddy Bridgewater is a capable “bridge” defender, but it is not a serious long-term response. Matt Rhule is looking for an update for the second year.

Carolina has some less obvious ties to Wentz. The Panthers hired former national Eagles scout Pat Stewart to be the team director of players in May last year. The Panthers also hired former Eagles analyst Taylor Rajack in 2019 to become Carolina’s first director of football analysis.

Reports indicate that the Panthers were willing to split from the eighth overall position this year to acquire Stafford. I don’t see them so willing to change that selection to Wentz. But they could certainly be calling.

Probability: 3/10

Washington is the right quarterback to be a team that can win double-digit games. Their current situation is far from inspiring. Taylor Heinicke did some good things at the start of his playoff, to be sure, but how much can Washington really bet on the old XFL backup? Alex Smith is not the same athlete after the injury and turns 37 in May. Kyle Allen is not a viable long-term beginner, but he can be an acceptable reserve.

The football team must be aggressive when meeting a defender, because they have some good pieces on both sides of the ball. But I don’t think the Eagles will want to repeat Donovan McNabb’s switch and move Wentz into the division. Unless they think it’s fully cooked right now.

Probability: 2/10

Many thought it was a stroke of genius for the Pats to hire Cam Newton cheaply last year. Although it was a low-risk maneuver, he ended the season with more interceptions (10) than passes for touchdowns (8) and a pass rating of 82.9. Needless to say, having Newton in 2021 doesn’t seem like a good option for the Pats.

Could the Pats come to call Wentz? Perhaps Josh McDaniels’ interest in the Eagles coach’s debut indicates that he would like to work with him? It is hard to imagine that Wentz would be thrilled by the hard training he would receive at his new landing site … but it is not exactly up to Wentz where he will be traded.

Probability: 2/10

Drew Lock is 8-10 as a starter with a passer rating of 79.1. I can’t see how comfortable Vic Fangio is just entering the season with him, when he probably needs to win this year to ensure his job security.

The Broncos reportedly offered No. 9 overall this year and Lock in exchange for Stafford. Again, I have a hard time assuming that the Eagles will get an identical offer. I think Denver could be at stake, however.

Probability: 6/10

The 49ers were apparently not willing to give up a strong package for Stafford, but would they give up enough to get Wentz? I don’t see that. I really think the 49ers would like to move from Jimmy Garoppolo, but not by replacing him with Wentz. Kirk Cousins is the most logical target for San Fran.

Probability: 1/10

Let’s be clear: I didn’t include this one to say that the Eagles are leaving Wentz for Deshaun Watson. This is simply not happening. There is no chance that Watson is waiving its no-trade clause to come to the Eagles everywhere. The assumption here is that Watson is moved elsewhere and the Texans need a new starting quarterback.

Houston currently does not have a choice in the first round and a choice in the second round this year, but they will be able to replenish their stock after moving Watson. Maybe they move one of these picks to catch Wentz. New Texans head coach David Culley, who turns 66 this year, seems more inclined to be in “win now” mode instead of taking him down and building around a rookie quarterback.

Probability: 4/10

The Jets obviously employ former vice president of the Eagles’ gambling team, Joe Douglas, as general manager. It is important to note that he was not on Philly’s board for the 2016 NFL Draft, so it’s not like he was part of Wentz’s draft effort. But, after seeing his success up close, perhaps Douglas would prefer him to take a quarterback as the No. 2 overall in this year’s draft. And perhaps Douglas thinks that Robert Saleh’s serious approach will be good for Wentz. The Jets have the third largest capitalization space in the NFL this off-season.

Probability: 3/10

The Saints are currently $ 101.7 million OVER the limit in 2021, so I don’t know how they are paying Wentz. And they currently only have four selections in this year’s draft. But the Saints need a quarterback with Drew Brees’ retirement. Taysom Hill is not a good long-term beginner. Sean Payton seems to want Jameis Winston back, but trusting him is a risky proposition. Then again, Payton previously saw Wentz as a weakness. Not counting on it to happen.
