State police said the suspect is dead.
Police said several agencies chased Deming’s suspect’s vehicle to the Las Cruces area before there was an exchange of fire.
The interstate is closed in both directions on mile 85-102. It is also closed at landmark 139-141.
The investigation should take several hours.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered the flags to be raised at half-mast in mourning for the murdered officer. She issued the following statement about the incident:
“I am shocked, heartbroken and furious at the loss of this public servant. I am praying for the local officer who was also shot and wounded. We are still learning more about what happened and why, as law enforcement authorities continue to investigate, and we will all get the facts about what happened today. But what we do know now is that a New Mexico police officer was killed in the line of duty and I am horrified to mourn another cut life, another family crushed by the senseless violence in our state. Violent crime is a scourge in New Mexico, and the men and women who present themselves and wear the badge to protect our communities fight against it with everything they have every day. We are and must remain grateful for your heroic service every day – and moments like this remind us why. The New Mexico State Police risked their lives to help keep us safe. I join the entire State Police community in New Mexico and New Mexico in mourning this heinous and senseless loss. ”
