Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had a fantastic debut season, but it did not lead to a winning record and this led the team to fire coach Anthony Lynn at the end of the season.
Brandon Staley is now the head coach and Joe Lombardi has been hired as the new offensive coordinator, which means that Herbert will be learning a new attack for the fourth time since arriving in Oregon. On Thursday, Herbert said he expects that number to stop increasing, while noting a positive aspect that comes from having to master a new system.
“I’ve been there before. It would be great to have a manual throughout your career, but it’s not always going to happen that way, ”said Herbert, via Joe Reedy from Associated Press. “I think it is a great opportunity to learn. You always learn from each manual. I think the more you go through it, the more you understand the football game. I had the opportunity to learn from so many different faces and different philosophies and I think it helped my game. I hope this is the last change I will go through, because I really believe in these two guys. “
Herbert said he started watching the Santos film because Lombardi was the coach of defenders in New Orleans. It remains to be seen what the off-season program will look like, but Herbert’s success in 2020 shows that he can take things without much time on the pitch.
