Weeknd is explaining itself.
The 30-year-old Canadian singer has made headlines in recent months for appearing in public with white bandages covering his face. What appeared to be bruises and scars were also visible around his eyes when wearing the bandages.
The fans were perplexed not only with the choice of the costume, but also with their facial changes in the video for their hit, “Save Your Tears”, which saw their cheekbones, chin and more being changed.
Now, before his next performance at the Super Bowl break, The Weeknd – born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Toronto – has revealed the meaning behind the suit, which has been revealed to be prosthetics.

“The meaning of all the bandages on the head is reflected in the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrities and in people who manipulate themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated,” he told Variety.

In addition, he said the bandages were part of a story he created for a character to accompany his album, “After Hours”.
As he appeared at events with more bandages and drastic visual changes, the looks were made to show “a progression and we watched the Character’s plot reach high levels of danger and absurdity as his story continues.”
WEEKND DEBUT FACIAL CHANGES FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO ‘SAVE YOUR TEARS’
It is no secret that in the video “Save Your Tears”, The Weeknd’s character is looking a little strange – not at all attractive.
“I suppose you can understand that being attractive is not important to me, but a compelling narrative is,” he explained.

As to why he sometimes appears as a character and sometimes not, the musician had a relatively simple answer.

“Why not play with the character and the artist and let those lines blur and move?” he said.

However, it seems that the lines may even be confusing for The Weeknd himself, as he said he would “have to ask” the character if he was appearing as such during the interview.
