Former South Carolina and Florida coach Will Muschamp is joining the Georgia team as an analyst, coach Kirby Smart told reporters on Wednesday.
Smart and Muschamp were teammates in Georgia and technical teammates at Valdosta State and LSU.
Muschamp’s role will be that of an off-field coach. Smart said Muschamp will “help train coaches” and work on the defensive side of the ball.
“It is very valuable to have a guy who was a coach in two positions at our conference,” said Smart. “He knows the ins and outs of this conference. He can help our team, our coaches, in many ways. I am excited to have him with us.”
Muschamp was fired by South Carolina in November, missing three games in his fifth season as a coach. Muschamp’s contract terms provided for a purchase of about $ 15 million.
Previously, he was principal trainer in Florida from 2011 to 2014 and served as a defensive coordinator in Auburn, Texas and LSU.
Georgia finished second at SEC East last season, going 8-2 and recording a 24-21 win over Cincinnati at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
