House brings small annual increases to South Carolina teachers

A proposal that would restore small annual increases for almost all teachers in South Carolina is on its way to the Senate.

The Chamber gave final approval on Tuesday to the resolution that gives teachers “gradual increases”, which are increases of several hundred dollars a year that teachers receive for each year of service.

The Senate approved the payment of the stage increases in an extraordinary session in September, but the Chamber did not accept the proposal.

If senators pass the resolution and the governor signs it, the increases in the measure will be given to teachers in one installment by June 15.

The Chamber suspended the increases to ensure that the COVID-19 pandemic did not greatly reduce tax collection in the state.
