The Globes are usually the first big show of the Hollywood award season, which ends with the coronation of the Oscar winner for best picture. They will maintain that distinction, despite the almost two-month delay, after an increase in virus cases in recent months pushed the Grammy Awards into March.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association said on Tuesday that Globes – typically a cheerful dinner with running drinks – will be held on two shores for the first time. Fey will host the Rainbow Room in New York live and Poehler will host the regular awards home, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Nominees are expected to come from locations around the world.
THIS IS AN UPDATE OF LATEST NEWS. The previous history of the PA follows below.
NEW YORK (AP) – Whether anyone will attend the Golden Globe in person is still uncertain and unlikely. But nominations for the 78th Globe will be announced Wednesday, however.
The strange and almost virtual Hollywood award season it lacks the usual kind of hustle and bustle on the red carpet that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association celebrates annually. More than perhaps any other awards program, Globes relies on a star trek – something that will not materialize when the awards are presented on February 28 at a ceremony organized by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
On Tuesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said the Globes – usually an animated dinner with drinks at will – will be held on two shores for the first time. Fey will host the Rainbow Room in New York live and Poehler will host the regular awards home, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Nominees are expected to come from locations around the world.
The nominations will be announced at virtually 8:35 am ET on Wednesday by presenters Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson. They will reveal 12 categories on NBC’s “Today” program, with full nominees announced live on E! digital channels and the Golden Globe website.
With no personal display or photo shoot with stars, little is known about how the 90-member press association – a notoriously unpredictable group in normal times – is rocking this year. But one thing can be a block: Netflix will receive many referrals.
Several of the streaming service’s films – including Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods”, David Fincher’s “Mank” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” – are considered pioneers, as are the Netflix TV series “ The Crown ”and“ Ozark. ”At last year’s Globes, Netflix also led all the studios with 34 nominations.
It is also widely expected to be nominated on Wednesday are Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” with Frances McDormand; Premiere in the direction of Regina King, “Uma Noite em Miami”; and August Wilson’s adaptation of George C. Wolfe, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” with Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman almost guaranteed to nod.
The division of the nominees by the Globes between drama and comedy / musical may also mean that a wildcard of the season – “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” – may arise. The film could be nominated for best feature film, comedy or musical, along with acting nods to Sacha Baron Cohen (also a candidate for his supporting role in “The Trial of the Chicago 7”) and Maria Bakalova. Also noteworthy in the category: the film “Hamilton”, ineligible for an Oscar, is a likely nominee for the Globe.
In the television categories, expect “The Mandalorian”, “The Queen’s Gambit”, “The Flight Attendant”, “Ted Lasso” and the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” in the mix.
In August, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Lorenzo Soria, died at 68. He was replaced by Ali Sar.
This year’s Globes were delayed almost two months because of the pandemic and to adjust to the late Oscar. The dates are set for April 25. Last year’s Golden Globe culminated with awards for “1917” and “Once upon a time … in Hollywood”. The broadcast, presented by Ricky Gervais, failed to counter the general trend of ratings for awards programs, attracting an average of 18.3 million viewers, a 2% drop from the previous year.
