In addition to the major changes introduced with iOS 14.5, such as the ability to unlock the iPhone with the Apple Watch, there are some small but notable changes to the iPadOS 14.5. For the first time, iPad now supports searching for emojis and a new landscape boot screen.
Emoji search came to the iPhone with iOS 14 last fall, but was strangely absent from the iPadOS until this week’s release of iPadOS 14.4. With this release, iPad users can now search for the specific emoji they want to use.
To use this feature, just open the emoji selector on the iPadOS keyboard and you will see a new search field. It works with the software keyboard or if you have an independent keyboard, like the Magic Keyboard, connected to your iPad.
Another small but notable change in iPadOS 14.5 is a landscape boot screen, first identified by 9to5Mac reader Steven. Now, when your iPad boots, the Apple logo will display correctly in landscape orientation if it is connected to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard. If you are not connected to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard, the Apple logo will still be displayed in portrait orientation.
These are small features compared to the other changes in iOS 14.5, but they are still noteworthy for iPad and iPad Pro users. The search for emojis was a stark omission when iPadOS 14 was released last fall.
