MSNBC and broadcast networks avoid the latest turmoil in Cuomo as New York health officials flee from his government

Much of the mainstream media continues to minimize the growing turmoil plaguing New York’s Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo.

A few days after New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report claiming that the state Department of Health may have underreported coronavirus deaths in nursing homes by up to 50 percent, The New York Times reported that nine of Cuomo’s top health officials have fled his government in recent months, due to apparent clashes with the outspoken governor.

However, Albany’s latest drama received no mention on MSNBC or the three broadcast networks on Monday.

Although CNN has addressed the Cuomo controversy twice during the day, none of its most watched prime-time shows, including “Cuomo Prime Time” hosted by the governor’s brother, have bothered to cover him.

Last week, news networks also downplayed AG James’s impressive report on coronavirus deaths in New York asylums. ABC completely avoided the controversy on the air, while CNN and MSNBC offered minimal coverage during their daytime programming and completely ignored coverage during prime time.

NBC’s “Nightly News” spent most of the time on Thursday night scoring 86 seconds, CBS’s “Evening News” devoted a few brief 10 seconds during a longer report on the coronavirus that Cuomo didn’t even mention for the name.

In the early months of the pandemic, the media largely flattered Cuomo’s “leadership”, despite his controversial nursing home policy ordering assisted living facilities to accept COVID patients from overcrowded hospitals. Critics point to Cuomo’s ill-fated policy as being responsible for the deaths of thousands of elderly New York residents.
