Jets send ‘smoke signals’ over Sam Darnold after trying to negotiate with Matthew Stafford, said an NFL official

The quarterback carousel is spinning out of control in the NFL.

On Saturday, the Detroit Lions traded Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and three draft choices, including two selections in the first round. But several teams, including the New York Jets, checked into Stafford before the Lions sent him away.

The Jets, as you well know, continue to be associated in trade rumors with Texans, although Houston denies that he is buying quarterback Deshaun Watson, 25, who asked for an exchange.

Monday The Dan Patrick ShowAlbert Breer of SI put the puzzle pieces together for the Jets, and that doesn’t look good for Sam Darnold’s future in New York.

I can say that one of the teams that checked in at Stafford was the New York Jets. And I don’t think they would go where the Rams went, but do you know what that is, Dan? I mean, some other teams, that was kind of a smoke signal for them. Like, OK, like you’re calling Matthew Stafford, for deductive reasoning, does that mean you’re leaving Sam Darnold? What if you could change Sam Darnold, now do I make an offer? Do you know what I mean? Or do I see what you might be willing to do with it?

So I think there are certain parts of Stafford’s business that lead to other things, and again, Texans will naturally get calls to Watson. But now that other teams that need defenders who might want a young defender see the Jets pick up the phone and call the Lions, if you’re one of those teams, do you pick up the phone and call the Jets about Darnold? I just think it’s fascinating and, of course, plays in the second overall choice. Now the Jets are looking at Zach Wilson or Justin Fields there? That’s where all the moving parts will be so interesting in the coming months.
