IOS users report that apps crash when opening after syncing iPhone or iPad with M1 Macs

Some iOS users have reported that they can no longer open any third-party applications on the iPhone or iPad after syncing devices with the new M1 Macs. Applications crash right after opening, making it impossible to use any installed applications.

The first reports of this problem were shared by users in December 2020, a month after the launch of the new Macs with M1 chip. Similar reports have been published in the Apple support community and also on Reddit.

According to users, third-party apps installed from the App Store simply stopped working after syncing the iPhone or iPad with an M1 Mac using the Finder. As shown in a video shared on Reddit, any of these applications closes as soon as the user taps to open them. It appears that the bug also prevents apps from being updated or even new apps from being installed from the App Store.

tl; dr after syncing my iPhone X (at 14.3) with my M1 MBP (at 11.1), no third party applications will open. It is also not possible to install or update from the App Store; the progress circle will be filled and will immediately become the “cloud” download icon.

Another user said in a comment that he was able to make the installed applications work again on the iPhone after connecting and synchronizing the device with an old Mac running macOS Catalina. However, what causes the bug is still unknown, as not even Apple support has been able to explain.

In the accident, I connected the iPhone and the MBP M1 via WLAN and synchronized…. The applications stopped working immediately. Then, connected to my old MBP (2012, latest Calatina) and synchronized. The applications are all running again.

If you have a Mac M1, the best thing you can do now is to avoid syncing your iOS device with your Mac until Apple fixes the bug with future software updates.
