A former Alabama defender is expected to return to Tuscaloosa as a member of the Crimson Tide team.
Shyheim Carter is expected to join the Alabama team as a graduate assistant, a source told AL.com.
The former four-star recruit was Tide’s nickel holder in 2018-2019 and ended his career with three interceptions, including two pick-sixes in 2018.
Carter spent time on the Atlanta Falcons training team this season, after initially signing with the New York Jets as an uncapped free agent.
“I think he’s the smartest defensive back we have,” said former Alabama star Xavier McKinney of Carter in 2019. “When Shy is there, I definitely feel much more comfortable, just knowing that he knows everything . He knows all the adjustments. So he’s kind of like one of those guys – if I don’t know, then I’m like ‘OK, let me see if Shy (you know).’ Or, if I’m not sure, Shy says ‘OK, this is what we’re playing’. So this is what we are going to play. He’s a real vet. “
