MADISON, Wisconsin – Almost 3 months after giving birth in a coma and battling COVID-19, a patient at UW Health finally reunited with her family, including her newborn daughter she never met, Lucy.

Kelsey Townsend was discharged from the University Hospital on Thursday after a months-long battle with COVID-19, according to a UW Health spokesman.

Townsend was nine months pregnant in October 2020, when she was diagnosed with COVID-19. She gave birth to Lucy on November 4, 2020, while in an induced coma.

After she gave birth to Lucy, Townsend’s health deteriorated and she was placed on life support systems.

In December, doctors at UW Health in 2020 said that Townsend would probably need a double lung transplant. Her husband broke the news to her on Christmas Eve.

A spokesman for UW Health said that a few days after she was placed on the waiting list for a transplant, Townsend’s condition began to improve. She was eventually removed from the respirator in mid-January.

After being discharged from the hospital last week, Townsend was reunited with her husband and four children, including Lucy.
