Saturday Night Live critics say the show avoided Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the first 2021 show

“Saturday Night Live” returned from its winter vacation with a slightly different approach to covering the policy that many viewers immediately noticed.

After spending four years relentlessly mocking Donald Trump every week, NBC’s popular skit program did not open with a representation of President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. This is not to say that the episode dodged politics. His open cold speared Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Mark Zuckerberg and Tom Brady while the show’s “Weekend Update” segment commented on the US Capitol riot.

The show had a lot of ground to cover after being absent during a busy period in US politics. Only January included the riots, a second historic impeachment of Trump and the rise of GameStop that launched Wall Street in a loop. Still, despite Biden’s inauguration and first week in office also taking place during the show’s break, many critics of the show noted that “SNL” didn’t seem interested in roasting the president in the same way he did when Trump was on the oval.

“Even a Saturday Night Live is bored with Biden and hasn’t mentioned him once!” a user wrote.

“What … DO NOT criticize the president on SNL ?? This is unheard of … we tolerate the weekly criticisms, impersonations, disgusting of Alec Baldwin and a number of other embarrassing, denigrating President Trump .. Now Biden and Harris are NEVER parodied! No skits, no personifications..Nothing! ” another wrote.

“SNL can’t say anything bad about Biden. He’s a Democrat,” a third user observed.

“Why is SNL avoiding the best source of comedy by giving Joe Biden a free pass?” another user added. “Poor Joe is an endless supply of comedy.”

“I would like to see Jim Carey play Biden again, he is funny. Will we see mocking President Biden soon, like when the SNL mocked Trump and other presidents while they were in office? An autograph spin-off of orders executives would be a funny piece! ” someone else wrote.

Although Biden was president only a week ago and the show premiered just one episode in 2021, many seem convinced that “Saturday Night Live” will never make fun of Biden or Harris. However, the program did not hesitate to regularly parody the two politicians during the campaign.

Former cast member Maya Rudolph was present to portray Harris during sketches of the debates, while the program called on Jim Carrey to portray the then-presidential candidate. In one of his final shows before the break, Carrey revealed that he will no longer be playing Biden on “SNL”, giving the position to cast member Alex Moffat.

“Although my term should only last 6 weeks, I was thrilled to be elected president of the SNL … the biggest call to comedy duty,” Carrey tweeted before Moffat’s debut. “I would love to move on knowing that Biden was the winner because I hit that s —. But I’m just one in a long line of proudly fighting SNL Bidens!”
