Police say one person died and another suffered minor injuries in a shooting at a mall in northern Wisconsin.
GRAND CHUTE, Wisconsin – A suspect left one person dead and another with minor injuries on Sunday before fleeing a shooting scene at a mall in northern Wisconsin, police said.
Police were called to Fox River Mall in Grand Chute, a suburb of Appleton, around 3:30 pm on Sunday. The unidentified shooter remained free on Sunday night, officials said.
Grand Chute police officer Travis Waas did not identify any of the victims.
Wass said the sniper left the mall before police arrived. Police said they were interviewing witnesses and following leads. No reason was immediately disclosed.
Photos of the location showed police officers, some with tactical equipment, standing outside the mall and what looked like customers leaving with their hands up.
Haylie Mirr, who works at a shopping restaurant called Box Lunch, said he knew nothing about the shooting, but said, “People started running. We just locked the doors and we had four customers in the store, we brought them to the back room. “
They were still waiting for everything to be cleaned almost three hours later.
It was the second recent shooting at a shopping center in Wisconsin. In November, eight people were injured in a shootout after a clash at a mall in Wauwatosa, in the suburb of Milwaukee. A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged.
Grand Chute is a city of about 22,000 people on the outskirts of Appleton, about 100 miles (160.93 kilometers) north of Milwaukee.
