Wendy Williams wanted a divorce two years after a 21-year marriage

Over the past 35 years, Wendy Williams has conquered the media world, dominating the radio industry for nearly three decades and subsequently winning the hearts of millions on her daytime talk show, “The Wendy Williams Show”.

Now Williams is letting fans enter his hot topic-filled life in his new biopic, “Wendy Williams: The Movie”, premiering on Saturday night, followed by his eponymous documentary, “What A Mess!”

In both projects, the 56-year-old media magnate discovers everything, sharing the personal struggles she has faced throughout her life, including heavy challenges that began as a child, cocaine addiction, alleged rape, various miscarriages and their relationship tumultuous with her now ex-husband and ex-manager Kevin Hunter.

Although her marriage began to fall apart publicly several years ago, due to alleged infidelity and abuse, Williams told Insider that, in particular, she had been executing her divorce plans for nearly two decades. The two married in 1997.

When asked at what point in her 21-year marriage she felt her happiness had been compromised, Williams said emphatically, “In the second year, because that’s when I finally got pregnant successfully from [my son] young Kevin and gave birth to him. “

“I went into the delivery room knowing in my mind, ‘I’m planning my divorce,'” she continued. “Kevin was a serial cheater. He cheated when I dated him. He cheated when I married him. He cheated while I was resting in bed for the entire nine months of my pregnancy.”

Insider held out his hand to Hunter, but he didn’t hear immediately.

Williams, who finalized his Hunter divorce in 2019, claimed that his ex betrayed him because he “got too comfortable”. But despite the problems at home, Williams said he made a conscious decision to stay because of his son, Kevin Hunter Jr., now 20 years old.

“I could not [leave] because the bigger the talk show got, and the more I looked into my son’s eyes … the more I decided to give it my all and thought I would make it in the end, so to speak, “the daytime conversation The show host, who must remain in the air until 2022, he told Insider.

But after the two broke up, Williams said he hoped to set a good example for his son.

“I prayed that young Kevin would be smarter than his parents and that I could run the proper divorce and be the right single mother,” she said.

Still, the talk show host said Hunter “will always be my friend, because we must be civil with each other because we are Kevin’s parents”.

“I don’t regret meeting Kevin. I don’t regret falling in love. I don’t regret having stayed with him for 25 years – 21 of them married,” added Williams.

Despite going through a public divorce while filming, Williams was so committed to the authenticity of his biopic that he invited Hunter to travel to Vancouver, where they were filming.

“He was definitely invited by me, as well as by Lifetime, with a promising note from me that he would not be spoken of in any other way, but of my truth in the documentary and portrayed in any other way than my truth in the film, “she added.

Still, Lifetime confirmed to Insider that Hunter refused to participate.

As for moving on to his next phase of life now that his son is away from home and in college, Williams is not wasting time getting exactly what he wants.

“At 56, you don’t have many chances to put your life back together. So, I will continue to be my best friend until the day I die, because only I know what is best for me, ”she said. “My [late] mom didn’t know what was best for me. My sister doesn’t know what is best. You don’t know what is best. My bosses never knew what is best for me. Only I know what is best for me. “

“I am extremely happy that I am still relevant enough to be able to go through some beautiful … double doors and say, ‘How are you?’ and still be young, fun and relevant to pop culture, “he added.

“Wendy Williams: The Movie” opens on Saturday night at 8 pm ET / 7 pm CT, followed by her eponymous documentary, “What A Mess!”
