The Rams want an upgrade on the quarterback. But first they need to get rid of the quarterback they have.
An exchange that would dispatch Jared Goff was discussed between the Rams and several teams, according to Jordan Rodrigue of TheAthletic.com. One such team may be the Lions, who reportedly had discussions with the Rams about an exchange involving Matthew Stafford.
It has become obvious that the Rams simply no longer want to be tied to Goff’s contract, which brings in over $ 43 million in fully guaranteed payments in 2021 and 2022.
But why would any other team want Goff’s contract? His performance has been mediocre for the past two seasons, and although he helped the Rams reach the Super Bowl after the 2018 season, it’s hard not to think that many defenders could have played as well as Goff in Sean McVay’s attack.
The Rams are now paying for their decision to give Goff a large contract extension in the off-season after they went to the Super Bowl. If they had only allowed him to fulfill his rookie contract, he would now be joining a free agency, and the Rams could decide in the coming weeks whether to extend, franchise or leave him alone. But because they extended it after just three seasons, they are bound by his contract.
Unless they can find a business partner. They will continue to spread the word that they are in trade negotiations, in the hope that some team will bite.
