The big picture: Nintendo is expected to release an updated version of its Switch notebook later this year. When it arrives, it can be marked to honor a previous Nintendo console, the legendary Super NES.
The new laptop, previously referred to in rumors as Nintendo Switch Pro, may reach the market as the Super Switch. Why the Super Switch, you ask?
It’s no secret that Nintendo has a thing for birthdays. Nintendo celebrated the 35th anniversary of its Super Mario Bros. franchise. at the end of last year and a quick check of the calendar confirms that 2021 is the 30th anniversary of the launch of the original Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).
The moniker Pro is somewhat used at this point, given the number of smartphones and tablets currently using it. The name Super would be something new and a throwback to a classic, although in fact, it probably doesn’t matter much anyway, since Nintendo’s portable platform has been hot since the first model launched in early 2017.
Even Nintendo’s retro mini-consoles resonated with gamers. The NES Classic surprised everyone and the successor, the SNES Classic, was equally coveted. At the last check, Nintendo sold 5.28 million units globally, although that number has not been updated for almost three years.
