Washington police arrested a 28-year-old man after discovering a vehicle containing the remains of several bodies.
The Adams County Sheriff’s office arrested Mauricio Nava-Garibay after finding the abandoned vehicle outside Othello, in eastern Washington, at 6:30 am on Thursday.
MPs responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle at block 2200 on Charla Road, in the city’s Edison Tracks region, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.
The vehicle, a white SUV, appeared to have blood on the hood, according to the person who reported it.
Upon discovering a deceased person inside the vehicle, the authorities protected the scene and contacted the Washington State Criminal Laboratory.
A search of the vehicle revealed “possible remains of other deceased humans” in the trunk of the vehicle. Authorities said the victims’ bodies were in poor condition, making identification initially impossible.
“Investigations like these are very difficult and delicate,” the statement said. “Once properly identified, the family will be notified before any other means of communication.”
Nava-Garibay was arrested in Adams County prison on suspicion of first-degree murder and other potential charges.
Upon arresting Nava-Garibay, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office released a second statement on its Facebook page saying the investigation was still ongoing.
“We remind everyone to be aware of the situation and everyone involved. The investigation continues, updates will continue as appropriate, “he said, adding:” Many details will not be displayed on social media due to the nature of the case. “
Othello, located approximately 100 miles southwest of Spokane and 180 miles east of Seattle, has an estimated population of 8,386 people.
It is known for its proximity to several National Parks, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, cycling and wildlife viewing.
The crime rate in 2018 was 109.13 per 100,000 inhabitants, down 30.95% from the previous year.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating in the ongoing investigation with several agencies, including the Othello Police Department, Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, State Patrol Criminal Laboratory Response Team of Washington and Moses Lake Police Department.
Anyone with information that may be relevant to the case should contact the sheriff’s office.
