People with the UK coronavirus variant are more likely to report these symptoms:

People infected with the most transmissible strain of coronavirus in the UK were more likely to report symptoms such as cough, fatigue, muscle pain and sore throat, according to a survey.

The findings from the UK’s Office for National Statistics were published on Wednesday in a sample of the population of British households taken between 15 November and 16 January.

The strain has been dominant in the UK since mid-December, due to rapid spread, according to Prof. Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group and chief investigator for the Oxford vaccine trial. The strain is believed to spread about 50% more easily from person to person, and scientists in the UK recently said the strain could be more deadly.

In the new findings, research participants reported their own symptoms, and the study compared the percentage differences with positive tests for another previous strain.

Those infected with the new variant reported coughing by an increase of 6.8% (35% vs. 28%), and increases were also seen among reported symptoms of fatigue, muscle pain and sore throat by 3.4%, 3 , 1% and 2.8%, respectively. Fever was reported 2.4% higher among those infected with the variant.

Meanwhile, symptoms such as loss of smell and taste had the greatest decreases, falling 3.5% and 2.9%, respectively.

“People with a positive result compatible with the new UK variant were more likely to report any symptoms and classic symptoms, but were less likely to report loss of taste and smell,” says the research. “There is no evidence of a difference in gastrointestinal symptoms, shortness of breath or headaches.”

It is important to note that the symptoms have not been diagnosed professionally.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists 315 total cases of variant B.1.1.7 in dozens of states. Health experts in the United States admitted that the number of variant cases is likely to be underestimated due to the surveillance of test samples.
