Your days of motion-induced motion sickness are over: Sea of Thieves will now run at 120 frames per second on the Xbox Series X.
The visual update was announced in a post on Xbox Wire, which detailed some of the major changes to the Rare pirate epic. These changes include a series of new missed shipment trips and 100 levels of premium rewards. The update will be free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Windows 10 PC and Steam.
The problem here is that the game will only run at 120 frames per second on the Xbox Series X in 1080p – not full 4K – and in an extended FAQ Microsoft says that some TVs may not support HDR and Performance Mode simultaneously, which means that you may have to manually disable the HDR.
That said, if you want to see the seas in all their glory, 4K / 60 with HDR is still an option, if you wish, thanks to the update that came to the game in November, when the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S were the first released.
Expanding the horizon for higher frame rate console games
Since launching the consoles a few months ago, we haven’t seen many games in 120fps performance mode – at least, not as many as we thought, considering that Microsoft has made 4K / 120 a big selling point for the console.
Adding a Performance Mode to Sea of Thieves doesn’t completely solve the situation, but it’s certainly a push in the right direction, especially considering that the game is widely available through the Xbox Game Pass.
Microsoft’s next big high frame rate game, Halo Infinite, won’t be released until much later this year, so be sure to keep up with your quiet adventure and don’t go through it.
