Although it originated at 20th Century Fox before the studio was purchased by the Walt Disney Company, the Dead Pool the franchise will remain in the hands of Marvel Studios. We have already obtained confirmation that Deadpool 3 is in development and will maintain the irreverent and classified approach to minors to superhero films that fans loved so much in the first two episodes. However, if a recent Twitter post by Ryan Reynolds is to believe, the merger may have made us lose a very different version of Deadpool 3 that would have involved Hugh Jackman like Wolverine.
Here’s what Ryan Reynolds posted on Twitter today in honor of the Bell Let’s Talk mental health awareness campaign:
It is essential to have open, honest and healthy discussions about mental health. Retweeting #BellLetsTalk You can make a difference. If that’s not enough, before Disney bought Fox, Deadpool 3 would be a trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. Seriously.

For those who don’t know, Bell Let’s Talk is a long-range, multi-year program designed to break the silence and stigma surrounding mental illness and support mental health across Canada (learn more here). As Reynolds is proudly Canadian and a passionate advocate for mental health awareness around the world, he has endeavored to bring attention to a worthy cause. In order to ensure that the message went a little further, he included that little rumor about Deadpool 3.
“Rashomon style” refers to a method of storytelling where the same event is recounted by several characters, but the stories differ in many ways that are impossible to reconcile. Each version of the story is subjective, alternative and often selfish and contradictory, making it difficult to decipher who is telling the most accurate version of the story. The term comes from the short story Rashomon, which was also adapted for an iconic 1950 film of the same name by Akira Kurosawa.
Imagining a Deadpool 3 where Merc with a Mouth is on a trip with Logan, and we heard (at least) two different versions of the same story, it looks like it would have been amazing. Even more surprising is the fact that Hugh Jackman would likely return as Wolverine if that were the storyline for the entire film. Considering the fate of the character in Logan, that probably would have happened before the events of that film. Perhaps Logan’s humble state in that final film can be partly attributed to being forced to take a trip with Deadpool.
It makes us wonder exactly what kind of travel Deadpool and Logan would have to embark on together. There is no Marvel Comics storyline that immediately comes to mind that triggers a journey, but Deadpool and Wolverine have fought frequently throughout their comic book history. Just the idea of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman fighting each other is worth the price of admission, so they may be on their way to see a Nickelback show for all of us. Anything would be better than the last time we saw Deadpool and Logan fight each other in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
We will admit that there is a chance that Ryan Reynolds is joking about this concept. But it would be strange for him to use Deadpool 3 to call attention to a noble cause, if it were just a lie. After all, he says “for real” in the end, and we don’t think Ryan Reynolds, a very likeable Canadian, would be so bold as to be dishonest in using that phrase. It’s a shame that we probably don’t see that idea come to fruition now that 20th Century Fox X-Men the franchise is complete.
