Orlando Sentinel has just announced that a new strain of COVID-19 has been found in Orange County, Florida, where the Walt Disney World Resort is located.
The strain is called B.1.1.7 and was found for the first time in the United Kingdom. This strain has been associated with more than 300 Covid-19 cases in the USA
The UK strain, and potentially others like it, carries greater danger because it is easier to transmit than others and can increase the number of cases, hospitalizations and, eventually, deaths. The CDC said it projects the mutation to become the predominant strain of the virus.
So far, Covid-19 vaccines appear to protect against this new strain.
Until the last CDC update, Florida and California each found 92 cases of the strain, more than any other state.
