Biomutant caught our attention three years ago, with ambitious promises to be an open world, a post-apocalyptic action RPG with a mutant protagonist who knows kung fu. It now has a release date of May 25, when we will know which of those ambitions have survived.
The game’s creative director, Stefan Ljungqvist, spoke to Colm about the game last year, talking about his world and his systems:
And, to be fair, it seems that much of that ambition has survived. It had airships, the mutant protagonist, distance combat and kung fu. It also had submarines, hang gliding, climbing and more. Breath Of The Wild definitely seems like a good point of comparison, and Ljungqvist compared it to Zelda, but with more emphasis on combat.
I look forward to playing. It is not always that there is a game with the scale and the apparent budget of Biomutant that seems so peculiar, or that is not part of an existing series. I hope your open world systems and design are as interesting as your environment.
We haven’t seen anything from Biomutant since the filming above, in June 2020, and we haven’t had a chance to play the game ourselves. I hope that changes soon. The announcement of the release date by THQ Nordic notes that “more information about the game will be released in the coming weeks and months.”
