‘Big Sky’ recap: season 1, episode 6

Big skyMerrilee Legarski may want postpone the planning of your husband’s funeral, Rick … because, as we found out at the end of the series’ winter premiere, he’s not dead!

As viewers will remember, Cassie Dewell fired a bullet into the Montana state policeman’s forehead in late fall, shortly after meeting him with the three women he planned to traffic to Canada. And that’s when Tuesday’s episode begins, with Legarski bleeding on the basement floor of Bar All In. He is transported to the hospital, where he stabilizes, but is revived, but in a coma.

Cassie is incredibly shaken by what she did; throughout the episode, she (understandably) hovers on the verge of a panic attack. When Jenny arrives at the scene while the emergency crew is looking after Jerrie, Grace and Danielle, she is full of hope about Cody. But that was quickly thwarted when Sheriff Tubb’s officers dug Cody’s truck, with the private detective’s body inside. Jenny screams and falls to her knees in mourning, while Cassie looks and cries silently. (Side note: even in her profound loss, this woman’s commitment to a detailed braid is commendable. At one point, even when she’s sobbing at home, Jenny is swinging a braid that would make Elsa jealous.)

At home, Ronald and his mother are freaking out. The police will search Legarski’s house to try to link him to sex trafficking, and if they find the hidden room where Rick kept all his records, Ronald will end. What’s more, thanks to the recovered victims, the police know that the other hijacker is a long-distance trucker with a custom paint job on his vehicle. So Ronald repainted his truck cab and messed up the license plate, then outlined a plan to break into Legarski’s home to eradicate anything that ties him to crime. (There’s still a pretty big part about Grace, Jerrie and Danielle being able to identify him, but ONE THING AT A TIME, MOTHER!)

Jenny and her son, Justin, perform a funeral and memorial service for Cody; the later reception includes some warm moments between the widow and Cassie, including when Cassie takes the stage to sing “Harvest” by Neil Young – Cody’s favorite song – after Jenny chokes out to survive. After that, the two women meet back at the office. “I never thought it would be you who would help me get over it,” Jenny tells her, and the bonding moment leads Cassie to offer Jenny Cody the spotlight. Jenny scoffs, but eventually agrees – only until the Legarski case is resolved.

Elsewhere, Jerrie is returning home when a man wearing a baseball cap calls her name and begins to chase her. It turns out that it’s just a guy she knows called Jimmy who “wanted to make sure you were okay”. The dynamic between them is a little confusing – it seems that he likes her, but she tells him that the days when she could talk to him “are over”. Still, she looks like she might really like his concern. At her house, however, there is a note saying “You don’t learn” on the door, reminding you of what Ronald used to say to his prisoners.

Unbeknownst to everyone, at the hospital, Rick’s fingers twitch, his heart rate monitor starts beeping faster and then he opens an eye!
