It’s hard to believe that the Foo Fighters haven’t done the halftime show yet. If there ever was a band specifically designed to play at the Super Bowl halftime show, it’s the Foo Fighters. It is almost as if some kind of government-supported think tank or laboratory created a band for the Super Bowl, it would be the Foo Fighters. The man Dave Grohl spent about 25 years trying to convince us that he is, Bruce Springsteen, has already done that. If the NFL wanted to choose a band that was universally applauded by its middle-aged press team, still overwhelmingly white, you wouldn’t be able to find one more in your pocket. The only risk would be Taylor Hawkins saying something really stupid with such a megaphone, proving the universal truth that you never let a drummer speak. In fact, the band as a whole proves this, considering Grohl’s origin.

Grohl probably has the impression that he or the band still has enough punk / street credibility to scorn such a show, but they missed it a long time ago. This is its natural end, and Grohl can no longer swim against the tide. If he desperately wants to cling to that imaginary credibility, he can only play drums while St. Vincent sings Nirvana songs and Josh Homme sings songs from Them Crooked Vultures during the performance, creating the best bait for the league and its audience. This would almost make up for the general annoyance of Foo Fighters’ presence in popular culture over the past two decades.
