No. 2 of UNC men’s tennis at the top of South Carolina, advances to the ITA National Indoor Tournament

After defeating South Carolina by a 4-1 score on Monday at Chapel Hill as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, UNC’s No. 2 men’s tennis team won their place at the ITA National Indoor Tournament.

Tar Heels won the doubles point to start the match, then took three of the first four singles matches to claim victory.

Providing these individual victories for UNC were Benjamin Sigouin (6-4, 6-4), Brian Cernoch (6-1, 6-3) and Simon Soendergaard (6-3, 7-5).

This will mark the seventh consecutive season that Tar Heels qualified for the ITA National Indoor Tournament, which will begin on February 12 and will take place in Champaign, Illinois.

“I am very happy that our boys are advancing,” said Tar Heel coach Sam Paul. “This was a difficult regional with some very good teams. Our guys have dealt with a lot to get to this point, including not playing in the fall and everything. We’re not quite where we want to be as a team yet, but we’re happy to move forward and have another chance to improve. “
