Despite the meeting election criteria, for millions of people, their first and second stimulus checks never arrived – or, only part of the payment came by direct deposit, Checks or EIP Card. It’s possible the IRS made a mistake, that you are losing money for your dependents, or what part of your check was garrished by mistake. Or you can be a tax not filed that needed to take a step further. Don’t worry: you can still claim the amount of stimulus money you are entitled to receive why when you submit your 2020 tax returnusing the IRS recovery discount credit.
This credit will not give you a separate check, but will increase the size of your total tax refundor reduce the amount of taxes due. And yes, even if you don’t normally file taxes (for example, if you’re SSI or SSDI, or you are retired), you will still have to file a 2020 income tax return to claim your missing stimulus payment (we have instructions on how to claim lost stimulus money for non-filters here) We recommend that your paperwork is in order before the IRS starts processing returns on February 12th, file your taxes sooner if you can, and signing up for direct deposit if you haven’t already.
The first step in obtaining your recovery discount credit is to confirm your online payment status through the IRS. If you see a confused message, or it seems there was an error, you may be a candidate to claim the lost money. In some cases, it may be necessary to request a payment tracking on your stimulus check from the IRS instead of using the credit. Here is everything you need to know about how to apply for a Recovery Discount Credit to redeem the lost stimulus money. In addition, here’s what we know so far about a third stimulus check, Including how much money could you get and how fast can you get. This story was recently updated.
How can I claim lost stimulus money on my tax return?
If you belong to one of the groups described below, estimated its total for the first stimulus payment or used our calculator to get an idea of your payment for the second and I think the IRS did not send the full amount did you qualify for, you have another chance this year to claim lost stimulus check money through an IRS recovery discount credit.
You will apply for credit when you make your federal tax returns this year. The IRS said it will begin processing 2020 tax returns on February 12, and federal tax returns expire on April 15. (In 2020, the IRS extended the deadline to July 15 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic).
Although the IRS does not yet have final instructions for each personal situation (more on this below), the agency says that taxpayers can use what will be called a Recovery Credit Rebate on Form 1040 2020 or Form 1040-SR to claim a recovery payment. The IRS will provide a recovery discount credit spreadsheet to help you find out if a payment is missing and how much.
To initiate a partial check refund request, you will need the calculated amount from the IRS from the letter the IRS sent confirming that your payment has been sent, please call Notice 1444 for the first payment and Notice 1444-B for the second payment when you file this year.
If you apply for the credit and it is due, you will see the increased tax refund amount or the reduced tax due amount, depending on the amount of stimulus money that you are eligible to receive.
If I am not a filer and generally do not need to file an income tax return, how do I claim my lost stimulus money?
Last fall, the IRS sent letters to 9 million Americans who may have qualified for a payment, but may not have known that they needed to register to claim it. This group – that the IRS categorizes it as “no filters” – includes people who did not file an income tax return in 2018 or 2019, such as older adults, retired, SSDI or SSI recipients and individuals with an income of less than $ 12,200. Those in this group needed to file a complaint using the Non-Filers tool by 21 November. The IRS said that if you miss the deadline, you can claim payment through the Recovery Discount Credit when filing a 2020 federal income tax return:
When filling out a 2020 1040 or 1040SR form, you can qualify for recovery discount credit. Save your IRS letter – Notice 1444 on your economic impact payment – with your 2020 tax records. You will need the payment amount on the letter when you order in 2021.
If you meet the requirements, you can start your claim using the IRS free tax filing service. We have more detailed instructions on how non-filers can file a tax return to claim lost stimulus money here.
How can I claim lost stimulus money for my dependent child?
According to the CARES Law, each qualification dependent child – those aged 16 or under – were eligible for a $ 500 check. But some people’s payments $ 500 left for each eligible dependent. If you claimed it by November 21, 2020, you should have received payment in December of last year.
As with non-filters, if you miss the deadline, the IRS said you can claim payment on your 2020 federal income tax return this year by filling out a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR form. You can use our stimulus check calculator to get an idea of how much you can be owed.
In the second stimulus check, each child under 17 received $ 600 as part of the family total.
Please note that in some cases, where parents are separated or divorced and share a dependent’s joint custody, each parent can receive a payment of $ 500 or $ 600 per qualified child, for the first and second checks, respectively, so you may not even be aware that you are eligible for payment to start.
What happens if my stimulus check was mistakenly deposited?
Although there are some cases where the federal government or a debt collector could seize your first payment to cover any outstanding debt, in general, if you qualify for a check, is yours to spend or save as you wish. One area where the federal government can decorate the first check is for overdue child support. You cannot have your second check seized for late support. However, if the parents are separated or divorced, only the spouse who owes alimony should have the check seized.
According to the IRS, a parent who does not owe child support must receive his share of the first payment without having to act. If you have not received your check, the IRS has informed you that it is working to send the missing payments. Although you do not have many resources to appeal IRS decisions, you can also try the Non-Filers tool to create a record of your claim.
I used the CNET stimulus calculator and I think the IRS owes me more money. What now?
If you use our first stimulus verification calculator or second payment calculator and discover that you may have qualified for a higher stimulus payment than you received, you can use the IRS Get My Payment tool to see if a check has been approved. If the IRS is waiting for your information that it needs to make your payment, you can still claim your money this year as a Recovery Discount Credit.

There are still unclaimed stimulus checks.

Why incarcerated people are not excluded from receiving stimulus money
Since April, when it started sending payments, the IRS has been hesitating those in US prisons and prisons qualify for a stimulus check.
A decision last fall by a federal judge in California, however, appears to have resolved the issue for the time being and has required the IRS to contact those incarcerated who may sue for a stimulus check.
